3 Tips for Storing Your Spirits at Home

If you’re an alcoholic, chances are you have more than one bottle at home. Maybe you have a well-stocked bar, maybe your bottles are scattered around your house — in your closet, on your shelves, even buried behind your fridge (hey, we don’t judge!). But if you want to know the best way to keep your liquor, then follow these three rules for storing spirits.

1. KEEP IT AT ROOM TEMPERATURE

Because of their high alcohol content, most distilled spirits — including whiskey, vodka, gin, rum and tequila — don’t require refrigeration. However, if the temperature is too high, the alcohol will expand and evaporate. While it doesn’t “spoil” the wine, heat — especially from direct sunlight — can increase oxidation rates, leading to changes in taste and loss of color.

How about freezing? Of course, some people like to freeze sake in the fridge before drinking it, but according to some experts, this can be a mistake. While there’s no risk that your wine will turn to ice (the alcohol content is too high to allow that to happen), storing spirits at lower temperatures could undermine the flavors you could otherwise enjoy, such as floral and other plant-based flavors.

In fact, many cocktails are made more delicious by the room-temperature drink that melts the ice in the glass. The melting of the ice creates a balance that enhances the taste of the wine. If you add ice to an already cold drink, it won’t have the same effect.

Your best bet is to store your wine at room temperature – but if you want real technique, experts recommend keeping it within 55 to 60 degrees.

2. TAKE MEASURES TO PREVENT OXIDATION

Unopened spirits can last for years if stored properly, but once opened, they are more prone to oxidation. As mentioned earlier, when the ratio of air to liquid increases, the taste and color of the wine changes. So when your wine is down to less than a third in the bottle, your best option is to finish it or simply transfer it to a smaller container.

While we’re here. – Skip the decanter. Your bourbon may look beautiful in crystal, but it may also oxidize faster if kept in such containers for a long time. Instead, choose to store your spirits in their original bottles, perhaps saving the decanter for special occasions.

3. STORE UPRIGHT, BUT DON’T FORGET TO WET THE CORK

While this goes against the rules of wine, liquor should never be stored on its side. When stored horizontally, the constant contact between the high purity alcohol and the cork can spell disaster for your favorite wine. If left unattended, this setup can actually disintegrate the cork over time, causing it to blend into your wine.

At the same time, you don’t want the cork to dry out or you’ll have similar problems. It’s best to keep your bottle upright, but turn it over every once in a while to re-moisten the cork. That way, when you do decide to enjoy a drink or two, you won’t be left with any unpleasant surprises!”.

Technically, wine doesn’t really go bad — and improper storage won’t make you sick. However, this can affect the taste and aging of your favorite wine. Our advice – buy small bottles of spirits you don’t drink often and invest in a stylish bar cart or liquor cabinet. And don’t forget to enjoy!
