7 Creative Uses for Glass Mason Jars

As a homemaker who enjoys preserving food, have you ever caught yourself wondering about ways to use glass mason jars in the kitchen? Something that doesn’t involve canning? If you’re a true country girl at heart, you probably already have a few “jar” tricks up your sleeve! And here are 9 ideas that will spark the creative juices for you.

1. Drinking Glasses

One of the cutest ways I’ve seen glass jars is as water glasses. Yes, you can go out and buy a set of water glasses, but using handle glass mason jars can give your drinks a lovely rustic touch. Whether you keep them in your closet and use them every day, or have a stack of pre-loaded adult cocktails for parties, these cans are a lovely and convenient way to serve drinks.

One of the benefits of using cans to hold party drinks is that you can pre-mix drinks, pour them into the cans, screw on the LIDS, and then pour them into a cooler or ice bucket. It reduces the amount of hands-on work that needs to be done during celebrations, which means you can spend more time with your guests.

2. Jam &Jelly

Have you ever made jams and jellies in your own kitchen before? If not, I teach you how here. Jams and jellies look pretty in a glass mason jar.

3. Salads and other sauces

One of my favorites is making lunch salads out of jars. It’s easy to layer salad ingredients into several jars at the start of the week and be ready to grab them on the way out the door. When assembling salad toppings, it’s important to place the dressing at the bottom of the jar, then add sturdier ingredients that won’t wilt. Good examples are carrots, celery, tomatoes or meat. Continuing to layer the ingredients, your leafy greens are added last to the jar so they don’t touch the sauce and get wet. When you’re ready to eat the salad, turn the jar over and leave it on the counter for a few minutes. The dressing will cover all the ingredients downward, so a quick shake will help disperse and mix your ingredients evenly. You can eat it straight from the jar or pour it into a large bowl.

4. Vases

The next trick, which has nothing to do with food at all, is to use mason jars as vases. No need to buy expensive vases that will only cause chaos around your home. Large jars that are also good for salads can also be used to display a bouquet of flowers.
